Overview
The 3-step workflow
You enter your numbers once in Google Sheets, download the file, and drag it into the app. That's it.
1

Set up your Google Sheet

Download the free template from the app, open it in Google Sheets, and fill in your monthly balances.

2

Export & upload to the app

Download the sheet as an Excel file from Google, then upload it using the Import Data button in the app.

3

View your charts & history

Your net worth, allocation, and month-over-month trends appear instantly. Export anytime to save a backup.

Tutorial 1 of 3
Setting up your Google Sheet for the first time
This takes about 5 minutes and you only do it once. After this your sheet is ready to use every month.
A

Download the template from the app

Gets you a spreadsheet already formatted with the correct column headers

1
Open the Net Worth Tracker app

Click Launch App at the top of this page, or go to app.html in your browser.

2
Click the Template button

In the top navigation bar, click the 📋 Template button. A file named networth-template.xlsx will download to your computer automatically.

3
Find the file in your Downloads folder

Open your file manager and look in the Downloads folder. You should see networth-template.xlsx there.

B

Upload the template to Google Drive

This opens the template in Google Sheets so you can edit it online for free

1
Go to Google Drive

Open a new browser tab and go to drive.google.com. Sign in with your Gmail if prompted.

2
Upload the template file

Click the + New button on the left side, then click File upload. Navigate to your Downloads folder, select networth-template.xlsx, and click Open.

3
Open it in Google Sheets

Once uploaded, double-click the file in Drive. A preview opens — click Open with Google Sheets at the top. The spreadsheet opens in Google Sheets.

4
Rename it something easy to find

Click the filename at the top left (it says "networth-template"). Type a new name like My Net Worth and press Enter. Google saves it automatically.

C

Fill in your financial data

Add one row per month — the columns are already labeled for you

1
Understand the columns

The spreadsheet has 5 data columns. Here is what each one means:

Date
Cash
Taxable
Retirement
Real Estate
2024-01
37,516
197,521
238,311
132,208
2024-02
2
Enter the date in YYYY-MM format

In the Date column, type the year and month like this: 2024-01 for January 2024, 2024-06 for June 2024. One row = one month.

3
Enter your dollar amounts — no $ sign, no commas

Just type the number. For example, if your checking account has $12,450, type 12450. Google Sheets will handle the formatting.

💡What goes where?  Cash: checking + savings + CDs.  Taxable: brokerage/investment accounts.  Retirement: 401k, IRA, Roth IRA.  Real Estate: home value or investment properties.
4
Add a new row each month

Every month, come back and add a new row at the bottom with that month's balances. Your history builds over time — the more months you add, the more useful the charts become.

Tutorial 2 of 3
Importing your Google Sheet into the app
Do this any time you want to see updated charts — it only takes about 30 seconds.
A

Export from Google Sheets as an Excel file

Google Sheets can save your spreadsheet as a .xlsx file that the app can read

1
Open your spreadsheet in Google Sheets

Go to drive.google.com and open your "My Net Worth" spreadsheet.

2
Click File in the top menu bar

At the very top of the Google Sheets page you'll see a menu bar: File  Edit  View  … Click File.

3
Hover over "Download"

In the File menu that drops down, move your mouse over Download. A second menu slides out to the right.

4
Click "Microsoft Excel (.xlsx)"

Click Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) in the submenu. Your browser will immediately download the file to your Downloads folder.

B

Upload the file into the Net Worth Tracker

Select the file and your charts update instantly

1
Open the Net Worth Tracker app

Go back to the app tab in your browser (or click Launch App at the top of this page).

2
Click the Import Data button

In the top navigation, click 📥 Import Data. A window opens with a file selector.

3
Select your Excel file

Click the file input, navigate to your Downloads folder, select the .xlsx file, and click Open.

A confirmation prompt will appear showing how many snapshots were found. Confirm to import them.
4
Close the window and see your charts

Click × to close the import window. Your net worth total, category cards, and charts will now show your data.

Tutorial 3 of 3
Exporting from the app back to Google Sheets
Keep a backup of everything, or take the app's export and update your Google Sheet with it.
A

Download your data from the app

The app exports in the exact same column format as the template

1
Click the Export button

In the top navigation of the app, click ⬆ Export. A file called networth-export-[today's date].xlsx downloads to your computer.

2
Find the file in your Downloads folder

Open your Downloads folder. You'll see a file like networth-export-2024-06-01.xlsx. This is a full copy of all your snapshot data.

B

Open the export in Google Sheets

Upload it to Google Drive just like you did with the template

1
Go to Google Drive

Open drive.google.com in a new browser tab.

2
Upload the export file

Click + NewFile upload. Select the networth-export-[date].xlsx file from your Downloads folder and click Open.

3
Open with Google Sheets

Once uploaded, double-click the file. In the preview, click Open with Google Sheets. You now have all your net worth data in a Google Sheet you can view, edit, or share.

4
Optional: copy rows back into your main sheet

If you want to merge this data back into your main "My Net Worth" spreadsheet, open both sheets, select all the data rows (not the header), copy them, and paste into your main sheet. Then re-export and re-import into the app.

💾Best practice: Keep one master "My Net Worth" Google Sheet. Every month, add a new row. When you want to update the app, download it as .xlsx and import it. Simple.
📅 Your monthly routine (under 2 minutes)
1 Open your "My Net Worth" Google Sheet and add a new row at the bottom with this month's balances.
2 Click File → Download → Microsoft Excel (.xlsx)
3 Open the Net Worth Tracker, click 📥 Import Data, select the downloaded file, and confirm.
4 Close the window. Your charts and history are updated. Done. ✅
